What to Expect
Your prenatal consultation is an educational and interactive session focused on understanding the basics of breastfeeding and preparing for your individual circumstances. We’ll cover:
-
How breastfeeding works — what to expect in the first hours and days after birth.
-
How to know when and how often to feed your baby, including hunger cues and normal newborn feeding patterns.
-
How to tell if your baby is getting enough milk — signs of effective feeding and how to monitor diaper output and weight gain.
-
Breast and nipple care — how to prevent and manage common issues like soreness, engorgement, or blocked ducts.
-
Pumping basics — when and how to start if you plan to return to work, share feeding responsibilities, or build a freezer stash.
Throughout the session, we’ll focus heavily on your unique situation — your health history, birth plan, family goals, and any previous feeding experiences — so the information you receive is tailored specifically to you.
Who Is It For?
A prenatal lactation consultation is a great fit if you:
- Are pregnant and want to learn what to expect when breastfeeding.
- Have had challenges with breastfeeding in the past and want to make a plan for next time.
- Know you’ll be pumping, supplementing, or returning to work early and want help preparing.
- Have a medical or anatomical concern (like breast surgery, PCOS, flat or inverted nipples, or risk for low milk supply).
- Simply want to feel confident and supported heading into your feeding journey
In-Person vs. Virtual
In-Person Appointments:
- Perfect for hands-on learning, practicing holds and positions, and reviewing pump equipment.
- Allows you to explore flange sizing, learn hand expression techniques, and get individualized feedback.
- Held in the comfort of your own home
Virtual Appointments:
- Great for convenience and flexibility during pregnancy.
- Includes the same educational content and individualized discussion — ideal if you’re on bedrest, managing a busy schedule, or live farther away.
- Conducted via a secure video platform; I’ll guide you through demonstrations and resources you can review afterward.
